Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, is the highest city in the world because it locates on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Potala Palace locates on the top of Red Hill, northwest of Lhasa City. It was built by King Songzan Gampo for greeting his bride Wencheng Princess of Tang Dynasty. It became winter palace of Dalai Lama since it had been reconstructed in the 17th century. Today it has been converted into a museum by government. Many treasured things are collected here so that it can be praised as the artistic hall. The palace is composed of two parts, Red Palace and White Palace. The Red Palace is situated at the center of Potala. The outer wall of Red Palace is painted to red, hence the name. Red Palace is devoted to religious study and Buddhist prayer. The outer wall of the White Palace is painted to white, hence the name. The White Palace is the living quarters of Dalai Lama.
Jokhang locates on the Barkhor Square in Lhasa. It is a monastery of Tibetan Buddhism. It was built during the reign of King Songzan Gampo in order to greet his wife, Nepalese princess. Jokhang is the most featured building of Tubo Dynasty. The Jokhang is a four-story construction with roof covered with gilded bronze tiles. The architectural style based on the Indian vihara design and later extended blending the style of Tang Dynasty and Nepal. The Jokhang owns very large and important collection of about eight metal sculptures, in addition to thousands of painting scroll known as Tangka.
Norbulingka is regarded as the Summer Palace in Lhasa. It served as the summer residence of successive Dalai Lama. When summer came, Dalai Lama transferred here to handle with religious affairs. Now it has been converted into public garden. Norbulingka is located at the west side of Lhasa. Norbulingka is separated into three sections, including the eastern, central and western parts. The park is also where annual Shodon, meaning Yogurt Festival is held. During Shodon from August 23 to 29, people can watch the free Tibetan Opera in Norbulingka.
Because Lhasa is located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, so that you should prepare sufficiently and pay more attention to altitude stress if you travel to Tibet
